As stated at my original post, I didn’t have much of a guideline to work with when writing Dekar’s obituary.  Therefore, this page is being set up as a resource to help other parents of babies who have been taken too soon.

All obituaries/memorials have been used with permission and if requested, sanitised to protect privacy.  Thank you to those who have been willing to share their obituaries in order to help other grieving families.  If you would like to share your baby’s obituary please use the contact form.   Let me know if I can use it as is, or if you would like me to sanitize any portion for privacy purposes.  You may also provide a link for obituaries that have been published online.

I found your site very helpful and thought I’d offer my obituary for our daughter Amethyst. She passed in my womb and was born the next day. Her death was a shock, even though we knew it to be possible.

Amethyst Nicole Mehaffey passed on from this life and into the arms of Jesus on December 20th, 2023 before her birth. Born December 21st at 12:00:24 am, she shares a birthday with her oldest brother Caeden. She was 33 weeks gestation and informally diagnosed with Trisomy 18. Her life was, from the start, a ministry of teaching, as she taught student midwives at a Mercy In Action College of Midwifery conference to identify the position of a baby in the womb. Taught her mother and father about adjusting to the unexpected. Taught her family and community about a life-altering condition (trisomy 18) with various outcomes ranging from stillbirth to a life of disability, to hardly any effect at all. She has taught people to forgive, heal, and to trust in the Lord. She will continue to minister to the lives of people who are hurting, through the testimonies of her family and community.

Amethyst, born breech (to a midwife/mother who passionately wishes to serve breech deliveries) at the University of Michigan Motts Children’s Hospital, was delivered into the hands of her homebirth midwife Jenn Seif, with the hospital midwife Alison’s assistance, to parents Samantha and Patrick Mehaffey, in the attendance of friend and midwife Ashley Jungjohan, and nurse Leaveka. She is missed by all, including her siblings Caeden, Sapphira, Micah, Esmarie, and Kya, maternal grandparents Lonnie and Suzan Miller, paternal grandparents Helen, and Robin Trumbull as well as several Aunts, Uncles and cousins, and great grandparents.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
Isaiah 61:1-3
